The potato plant probably evolved from tomato plans about 9 million years ago. That is todays fascinating potato fact.

In this latest image, though its not easy to see here. the plants have started to form flower bud so they are now at more or less their full height.
If we continue with our ludicrous humans analogy the guys are now off to college, or looking to get married or something.
While we are giving out facts about potatoes, here’s one you might not have heard before…In their paper “The Comparative Effects of White Potato and White Rice Consumption on Measures of Cardiometabolic Health in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Features of Metabolic Syndrome” published in Current Developments in Nutrition (Vol. 9, Issue 9), The authors (
White potatoes did not negatively affect glycemic indices, vascular health, lipids, or blood pressure compared to white rice and modestly improved body composition and vascular measures.

Were back again with more potatoey goodness. The plants are now big enough to be sending them off to high school.
If they were humans they would definately be teenagers by now.
The Kestrel plants on the right should reach maturity after 90 days. We should have some tasty potatoes to eat by then.
An interesting fact to try and make these increasingly samey posts relevent… According to the Alliance for Potato Research & Education on any given day at least 1 billion people will eat at least one potato.
As a change of pace here is a Pumpkin plant we have growing.

These potatoes are now easily recogniseable for what they are.
Incidentally no-one asked what types of potatoes they are. I’ll tell you anyway. On the left we have Desiree and on the right we have Kestrel.
At this point we have to accept that one of the Kestrel seed potatoes failed.
